On Indian Land

image

Photo taken at Chiricahua National Monument in southeastern Arizona.

The Chiricahua Apache Indians used to live in the area where I took this photo, and today it stands as a national monument.

Around 1690, they broke off from another group of Apache Indians and settled here. The Spanish frontier was expanding at this time, and the missionaries who arrived at the small villages in the area heard stories from the townsfolk of a fearsome people who lived in the mountains; fearing for their safety, the missionaries never ventured up into this deadly territory. The raids they made on the nearby towns had given them a reputation: they were nothing to play with!

The Chiricahua were a people constantly on the move, and their diet consisted of mostly roots and berries, living off the land you now see before you. They wore clothing made of animal skins and lived in homes made of brush materials; the land around them provided everything they needed.

While many others native residents had been displaced, the Chiricahua still had control of their land up until the 19th century. They were a people not easily conquered-even by a foe that was much larger and possessed more advanced technology.

The constant warfare with the United States, however, eventually wore them down, and they were forced onto reservations mostly in the New Mexico and Wyoming areas. Now, the area is almost eerily quiet-empty, except for the mountains and the trees.

After walking around and taking as many photos as I could, I drove back towards the highway on the small, winding one-lane roads. 40 minutes later, I arrived at a small town. It was forsaken looking and abandoned. There were remnants of small businesses, decaying buildings, and other signs of decay. Its people had also found themselves somehow displaced. #photography #photographer #nature #nativeamerican #american #history #travel #travelphotography #writer #arizona

The time for health is now

I better be careful. I’m now very aware of the fact that when you start talking about a subject like this, emotions are awakened, and the next thing you know, someone is arguing with you about the virtues of animal products. People have opinions. People are entitled to them, and they will dig their heels in when they feel their beliefs about food are being questioned; however, this to be expected when one finds themselves inserting doubt into the misinformation distributed en masse by the food industry. Remember the food pyramid? I think someone made a mistake with that thing. There have been too many heart attacks and health problems-due to poor diet-in my family tree for me to turn a blind eye to a very real problem: the American diet is in need of a major overhaul before it’s too late.

It’s difficult to affect change when we don’t all agree on the facts. Could this article by the World Bank (concerning food scarcity), be one of the things we agree on? There are many more sources, but I felt this one is worth taking a look at when considering the resources being used to feed the excessive meat and animal product consumption in the United States:Β World Bank; Food Scarcity Article.

Maybe we would all agree that something needs to be done regarding the macro issue, which is we need to better manage the natural resources we have been blessed with-rather than disagreeing on the micro issues and details?

I can only hope. In the meantime, I’ve taken my own steps towards doing something. Take for example this meal I made for myself last night. I’m a single guy. No woman is going to be making food for me anytime soon, so I had to learn!πŸ˜‚ It’s a new world, and I’m with it. This way I can make my lovely guest things like this. I can also make sure the food is healthy and has quality ingredients (like you see in this picture). I was able to get all the nutrients I needed (see why quinoa is so wonderful here:Β Quinoa: The Supergrain Of The Future!πŸ˜€

image

I added some mixed nuts ($7.99 a pound at Kroger/Fry’s), a raspberry vinaigrette, and the salad mix (which you can get a big plastic container of for around $4.99). All this stuff cost me under $30, and I’ll be able to make food for days. So besides putting my health first and getting in the best shape ever as a result of a vegan diet, I’m also saving money!

image

For those of you that have been considering a vegan diet, or just want to know why so many people are eating this way, look at the natural beauty in this picture!πŸ˜„ All this came from the Earth, and the fact that it is wholesome and nutritious in indisputable. Can we say that for most of the processed, sugar-filled, antibiotic fed, obesity causing, scientifically altered, and nutrient poor foods available for cheap in the grocery store?

The time for change is now. Health is imporant now. People are struggling with food scarcity now. With these thoughts, I continue the 60 day challenge, which I made to myself, to eat vegan (I’m 3 and a half weeks in!).

I pray for your health-as well as my own-and hope you will consider what I’ve written and research for yourself. This gift of renenwed energy, vigor, and happiness-I couldn’t help but share with you. Have a great week!

In the place to be!!πŸ˜„

This morning, I’m dreaming of the place to be. Art on the walls. Palm trees against the backdrop of the beach and the ocean. Everywhere I look, I see colors among colorful people-in other words, diversity like a rainbow. The outside world is the art gallery.

Beauty, art, and an army getup

This is a US Army Doughboy uniform that dates back to 1971. I saw it at the “Defining Moments: 50 Years Of Fashion” exhibit at the Phoenix Art Museum a few months ago.

It would be easy to assume that this exhibit was primarily for women, however, that couldn’t be further from the truth; case in point, just look at the photo here!
Art is everyone! Well, at least good art is! Hope you enjoy what I’ve shared here. I think it would be pretty hard not to like this art & piece of history shown in this image. Peace!πŸ˜„βœŒπŸΎοΈ

Street paintings

image

It may not appear like it, but this is a photo I took of some art on a wall in the Wynwood Art District in Miami, FL. This is only part of the image (it was too large to fit into one photo), but you can see so much in it. A skull. Purple hand. A woman’s red tresses. Somehow this amazing artist made this all fit together. This is the kinda stuff you see here just walking along the street!

Patti Smith

image

Patti Smith.

When I was growing up, I never heard her music playing around the house, or around my friends, and I didn’t even know who she was until I started reading about artists who influenced rock and roll in a big way, as well as punk rock. Her first album, Horses, is a classic, and her style and creativity is an inspiration to me. She’s an amazing writer, so many of the songs she has written are poetic, they take time to digest and really hear everything.

This a photo I took of a photo of her at the LACMA, which is featured with other Robert Mapplethorpe photos in the “Reigning Men” exhibit in Los Angeles, California. Culture is beautiful (all of it!), and I think the more women are featured as the stars and equals that they are in, entertainment, music, and all areas-well then all the better!πŸ˜„

Panda!Β

“Black X6, Phantom
White X6 look like a panda
Goin’ out like I’m Montana!”

Song lyrics from “Panda”Β by Desiigner

image

I couldn’t but think of “Panda” by Desiigner when I saw this in the Wyndood Art District while visiting Miami. Aren’t the colors great? One reason I love art so much is because of its ability to inspire and have so many different layers of meaning. In this case, even for folks out there who don’t follow popular music, you’re still likely able to enjoy the image of this gorgeous panda! And ain’t she gorgeous?! Have a great rest of the weekend everyone!πŸ˜„

Took my time taking this photo. Abbey Road? The Beatles? Gotta respect it! Tucson, Arizona has surprises like this everywhere. Beautiful city!

Menswear in the free world

Suits will NEVER go out if style. Menswear will never die. Here before you, is one of the reasons why!
It’s a suit designed by Kenzo, and part of it is decorated with outlines of threads, patterns, and stitching a bespoke tailor would use to make a suit. It was his way of paying respect to the legendary tailors of Italian menswear.

Again I say, menswear will never die. Keep on rockin’ in the free world y’all!πŸ˜‚β€οΈβœŒπŸΎοΈ #writersofinstagram #fashionblogger #writer #theblackaesthete #art #fashion #style #Kenzo #LACMA #losangeles

Friday Controlla

“I think I’d lie for you.
I think I’d die for you.

Jodeci “Cry For You”.

Do things when you want me to.
Like controllaaaaa, controlla!
Yeah, like controllaaaaa, controlla!”

– From song “Controlla” by Drake on “Views” album

I don’t care what anyone says about Drake. It’s a hard thing to make songs that appeal to so many different people with different tastes. Shoutout to Drizzy for the feel good Friday song vibes!

Like Drake and this song, I decided to take a risk and try something different. The sleeveless hoodie is something I found on sale recently, and even though I have no true need for one, there is something strangely satisfying about it!

The shorts (with the pockets designed like they are) are safari shorts in a light, olive color. I don’t have any pants or shorts this color, and I try to buy colors of things that I don’t have. Otherwise, it’s easy to wind up buying things similar to stuff you already have in your closet.

To finish things off, I threw on some 6 year old Vans. Their longevity is a testimony in itself!
Are you ready for this weekend? If not, put on “Controlla” and start dancing! I’m ready for it. I’m done dancing for now and am going back to my Tupac DVD’s. Catch ya later!
