In the place to be!!😄

image
This morning, I’m dreaming of the place to be. Art on the walls. Palm trees against the backdrop of the beach and the ocean. Everywhere I look, I see colors among colorful people-in other words, diversity like a rainbow. The outside world is the art gallery.

Beauty, art, and an army getup

This is a US Army Doughboy uniform that dates back to 1971. I saw it at the “Defining Moments: 50 Years Of Fashion” exhibit at the Phoenix Art Museum a few months ago.

It would be easy to assume that this exhibit was primarily for women, however, that couldn’t be further from the truth; case in point, just look at the photo here!
Art is everyone! Well, at least good art is! Hope you enjoy what I’ve shared here. I think it would be pretty hard not to like this art & piece of history shown in this image. Peace!😄✌🏾️

Street paintings

image

It may not appear like it, but this is a photo I took of some art on a wall in the Wynwood Art District in Miami, FL. This is only part of the image (it was too large to fit into one photo), but you can see so much in it. A skull. Purple hand. A woman’s red tresses. Somehow this amazing artist made this all fit together. This is the kinda stuff you see here just walking along the street!

Panda!

“Black X6, Phantom
White X6 look like a panda
Goin’ out like I’m Montana!”

Song lyrics from “Panda” by Desiigner

image

I couldn’t but think of “Panda” by Desiigner when I saw this in the Wyndood Art District while visiting Miami. Aren’t the colors great? One reason I love art so much is because of its ability to inspire and have so many different layers of meaning. In this case, even for folks out there who don’t follow popular music, you’re still likely able to enjoy the image of this gorgeous panda! And ain’t she gorgeous?! Have a great rest of the weekend everyone!😄

“Abbey Road” in Tucson

Took my time taking this photo. Abbey Road? The Beatles? Gotta respect it! Tucson, Arizona has surprises like this everywhere. Beautiful city!

Menswear in the free world

Suits will NEVER go out if style. Menswear will never die. Here before you, is one of the reasons why!
It’s a suit designed by Kenzo, and part of it is decorated with outlines of threads, patterns, and stitching a bespoke tailor would use to make a suit. It was his way of paying respect to the legendary tailors of Italian menswear.

Again I say, menswear will never die. Keep on rockin’ in the free world y’all!😂❤️✌🏾️ #writersofinstagram #fashionblogger #writer #theblackaesthete #art #fashion #style #Kenzo #LACMA #losangeles

Flowers and worry

image

“And why do you worry about clothes? See how the flowers of the field grow. They do not labor or spin.”

Why do I worry? Worries not of clothes, but anxious thoughts of survival? Will I be able to? How will I pay for? Will she? The flowers explain it all, and there is no need to worry-today or any day. All I need to do is think of these flowers when those thoughts come, and the answer is plain to see. The future is bright and full of color!

Keep the dream in front of you

This is how I keep my dreams in front of me. Beautiful scene huh? It reminds me of the ability we all have in us to overcome obstacles. If you see a gap, build a bridge!!😄❤️✌🏾️

We Are All Human

image

I don’t mind writing my thoughts out because it’s part of being human.
Caring for one another? Human. Ending senseless violence and death? Human. Standing up and saying something about messed up laws? Human? Praying for those we lost and those who are hurting? Also human.

The mass killings are inhuman. The separation we let divide us is inhuman. Discriminating against people in any way shape or form-whether they be gay, a different skin tone, or a different gender? That’s right! You guessed it: inhuman!
And as much as I wish I could go back in time and stop just one of these mass killings from happening, I can’t. After all, I’m only human.

There is something we can all do though.

Treat each other with love, respect, and at the very least (even if you don’t like the person or have a different theology than them, whatever, etc.) RESPECT!

I hear a cry for changing gun laws. I see fingers being pointed, but there can be no finger pointing done without first taking the speck out of your own eye. We are all imperfect and have erred. We all misunderstand. We all miscommunicate. We all hurt people around us unintentionally sometimes.

Lack of love is dangerous. Anger unchecked is dangerous. If we fail to love those around us, there won’t be enough gun laws to save us. And as much as I love art and beauty, the most beautiful thing is you: the soul you can’t see nor can any man perfectly describe or explain.

I may not be the smartest person in the room, but I do know the answer to ending these tragedies.

Love, respect, dignity, and human rights to ALL!!❤️✌🏾️ #writer #writersofinstagram #theblackaesthete #art #photography #streetart #love #poetry #beauty #blogger #artlover #graffiti #hiphop

Hip-Hop goes back to the essence

Even as a big fan of music, it can almost be overwhelming to have such an enormous amount of music available. It’s unprecedented. With all the new streaming technologies available, and smartphones giving us more than we could possibly listen to, it’s a great time for listeners.

Popular streaming services

Sometimes, I reminsce over the time when California hip-hop was at the height of mainstream success (mid 90’s), and in a conversation with a successful independent recording artist, DTown, we talked about the state of hip-hop today and how things have changed.

We talked briefly about how the Internet has broken down regional barriers and opened up opportunities to have their music heard virtually anywhere. Also, the success of shows like “Empire” (a #1 network TV show with a huge age range of fans: 18-49)  Still, even with a bigger audience available (compared to that time in the 90’s), artists still face pressure by major labels to compromise their values to accommodate the audience. We both agreed that this was one of the areas holding hip-hop back from reaching its new, larger potential.

In general, artists are not gaining as much in return as listeners in this new model-one that still caters towards major labels and popular artists.

There are still some that beat the system though. Take for example LA’s own Nipsey Hussle (who I’m a big fan of), but has chosen to go the independent route. I asked DTown why many artists choose to forego signing with major record labels.

Recent release by Nipsey Hussle

He explained how it was better for him, and many other musicians, to have their own distribution and websites (revenue from streaming services is minimal). They have adapted by going to a more entrepreneurial and more decentralized type of music business model; one that gives artists direct contact with their fans, and which also affords them more control.

As we talked, our discussion naturally turned towards the subject of Kendrick Lamar: an artist, who we both agree, is the one rap artist whose music is most in tune with the vibe of the culture right now.

My KDot playlist!

We talked about how Kendrick was leading the way in the trend towards greater attention to lyricism in rap. This has been encouraging to him, as well as other artists he knows, as they have chosen to stay true to themselves, rather than change to make themselves more appealing to an audience overwhelmed with choices. This isn’t going to change anytime soon, and attention spans will likely only get shorter as a result.

One thing, however, hasn’t changed with all this new technology, and that is LA’s impact on hip-hop. For example, DTown being in Ohio didn’t prevent Kendrick from influencing him out there. This makes me thankful to have big artists, like him, whose incredible artisty benefits us all and inspires their peers.

There are myriad independent artists out there, and if the new streaming models figure out a way to benefit them as much as consumers, that is when we all will truly benefit, and the sleeping giant within hip-hop will awaken.
